Roy Davis was granted a license for Brownsville’s first radio
station in November, 1964. Shortly thereafter, Davis put
WBHT-AM (now WNWS-AM) on the air. About three years later Davis
obtained a license for WBHT-FM (now WTBG-FM).
In the late ‘60s or early ‘70s (none of us can remember),
Davis sold his stations to the late Ben Gaines of McKenzie,
Tennessee. Gaines owned and operated the stations until about
1975 when he sold them to Bill Pope (McKenzie) and Dr. Harold
Butler (Union City).
In 1978 a deal was struck to sell the stations to the
Brownsville Wireless Corporation. For the first time the radio
stations were in the hands of hometown owners. The stockholders
were Lyle Reid, James T. Haynes and Carlton Veirs. Eventually
Reid and Veirs purchased Haynes’ interest in the company and,
upon adding other media properties including the Brownsville
States-Graphic, changed the name to Wireless Group Inc.
Today Wireless Group Inc. owns WNWS-AM and WTBG-FM and serves
as the management company for WNWS-FM located in Jackson. It
also oversees publishing interests Mid-South Hunting & Fishing
News and Bass Club Digest. The company is also responsible for
the advertising sales for Bill Dance Outdoors, a national
television series seen on the 70 million household Versus cable
television network.
